Smooth Ways to Start Your Day and Make the Most Out of Your Breakfast

The Smoothie is quite possibly the world’s most perfect breakfast. I cannot think of a simpler (or tastier!) way to start the day off right. You tell me. Is there anything else you can think of that takes mere minutes to make, contains a massive chunk of your daily dose of leafy greens, as well as antioxidants, vitamins, protein and more without sacrificing flavor? Now add to that, clean up only takes a minute or two, and all this fits into a container you can run out the door with.

I know right? Did I also mention that the possibilities are endless as far as flavor combinations and that you can easily keep your spending to a minimum when purchasing ingredients?

To get started, you only need a few things.

  1. A Blender. To start off with, I just used a modest Oster $14 blender. It didn’t take long before I realized that this was going to be a daily thing, and that’s when I invested in my Nutribullet and my Ninja Pro. Don’t feel like you need to spend a ton right off the bat. Feel your way around a bit, make sure it’s for you and that it fits into your lifestyle. Any old blender will do as you are getting started on your smoothie journey
  2. Produce. Start off with your favorite fruits, veggies, and greens. There are so many wonderful things you can use to make a good smoothie and as you progress on your journey, you will probably introduce some new things into your creations. Each day is a chance to retrain your tastebuds and integrate new foods into your diet.
  3. A sense of adventure. Rome wasn’t built in a day, and you will find that as you do this more and more, your smoothies will contain less sweet fruits and more greens and superfoods. If you are already way into greens, good for you! You have a great base to build off of. For me personally, I had to start off hiding my greens in a sea of fruits. I started off with bananas and pineapple with some spinach snuck in, and now I’ve graduated into things like avocado, kale, spirulina, and more. Each day my smoothies get greener and greener.

A great resource for the beginning smoothie enthusiast is a book called ‘The Healthy Smoothie Bible’ by Farnoosh Brock. I ordered this book from Amazon at the beginning of this adventure and now, it has a permanent place on my smoothie station and I reference it every day. In this book, the author takes you step by step through shopping for as well as preppingFB_IMG_1552333359128[111] your produce and provides tips for cleaning and storing your finds so you can make sure to get the most out of your purchases. You will also find comprehensive lists of possible ingredients, as well as their health benefits, broken down into sections based on the type of ingredient, and even price, so you know what is indispensable and what things are a splurge allowing you to tailor your adventure to your budget and lifestyle. She shows us that you don’t have to spend a ton of money to get max benefits. There are also helpful tips on choosing the right blender for you, a quick guide to tasty ingredient combinations, and over 100 tried and tested recipes to get your creative juices flowing.

There are also many supplements and superfood powders you can add to your smoothies to pack in some extra punch. I use Organisource Bone Broth Protein in my morning smoothie each day. It is collagen-rich with glucosamine and other nutrients for joint, skin, and hair health. At almost 40, I need all the help I can get to promote joint health, flexibility, and youthful looking skin and hair! If you don’t want to add protein powders, that’s ok! Avocado, nuts and nut butters, as well as Greek yogurt, are all excellent sources of protein and healthy fats and can turn your smoothie from a drink to a full meal replacement. Other favorites are Acai berry powder, Spirulina, and when I have a craving for a treat, Cacao powder makes my smoothie a chocolatey indulgence!

It really doesn’t get any easier than that!
